The Pop Shop/(art)ifical Gallery Becomes Breakneck Gallery

After 6 fun and crazy years, the Pop Shop/(art)ificial Galleries will be retiring their names… for at least a few years. This news comes not as an economical down fall, but because of the newest addition to the Pop Shop family. My wife (Sarah) and I are expecting our first child in late September. I have made a very difficult decision to devote the time that once was “gallery time” to enjoying it with our new baby. The thoughts and goals planned for the Pop Shops future are to reopen in 3-5 years and continue its legacy. During its down time and lack of a “physical” home, the Pop Shop will become a conceptual gallery. The gallery will still plan, curate, and promote external events, and will remain quite active in the Cleveland arts. The Pop Shop Picture frame shop will STILL be available (17016 Madison) to aid in your custom framing needs. (We’re still around if you want to say hello.)
Have no fear on Cleveland losing another gallery. Arrangements have been made to pass the buck and support to two of the Pop Shop’s longest supporters and artists. Sean and Kristen Burns will be taking over and bringing Break Neck Gallery (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Breakneck-Gallery/187820891266681) in August to the Pop Shop/(art)ificial Space. Please visit their facebook page, and see what they have planned for their grand openings! I expect nothing but great things with Sean and Kristen’s decision to take the over the space. I’m confident that their galleries will become the front runner for the Cleveland Scene in very little time.
Please join the Pop Shop Gallery as it houses its last few shows (June 18th – The $50 Show, July 9th- Avenging Cleveland/Midnights on Oak, and Aug 20th – Who the Hell is Josh Usmani?) this summer. At this time the gallery will only be reviewing work for the $50 show and Avenging Cleveland. Other submissions will be directed to Break Neck Gallery. With the Avengers movie set to begin its Cleveland principal photography in August and announcement of casting calls well underway, the excitement for this momentous event in our city’s legacy is palpable. For the first time, multiple blockbuster films will be combined into a single cinematic experience, an experience in which the city of Cleveland will play a large part. To this end we, in collaboration with over 25 Cleveland based artists have created a multitude of artworks both inspired by and paying homage to the Marvel Comics super hero team, The Avengers.

Curated by local artists Jeff Hulligan and CHOD, Avenging Cleveland promises to showcase a collection of homegrown talents including Derek Hess, Bob Peck and Joe Ayala. Each bringing their own unique take on such iconic Marvel characters as Captain American and Iron Man. Plus, with the Avengers rooster boasting over 100 strong, it’s fair to say that this show will have faces both familiar and obscure, heroic and villainous

The show will also be sponsored by the renowned Cleveland area comic retailer, Carol and John’s Comic Book Shop who have donated a multitude of comic paraphernalia in support of this amazing event.

In addition this show also marks the end of an era as it will be the grand finale event for the Pop Shop Gallery. However their creative spirit will live on as the space will be reborn under new management as Breakneck Gallery in August of this year.

Feb 12th, 2011: Armored Charmers featuring Cleveland artists Bob Peck, Steve Knerem and Sorin Gabor

The name "Armored Charmers" can be applied to both the artist's work and
the artists themselves. In their solo works of art, each piece is a
highly-stylized product. Flowing lines, bursts of fluid color, waves,
tentacles, brushstrokes and skulls all inhabit Steve Knerem, Bob Peck, and
Sorin Gabor's paintings and drawings. When collaborating, they layer and
interlock their trademark designs, creating illustrative structures that
appear capable of fighting off a giant monster in downtown Tokyo.

The trio bring everything from anatomic to abstract in a
Frankenstein-esque
art endeavor to remember.

As for the artists themselves, at first glimpse these tattooed, bearded
and
pierced creatives look more like the group you don't want to meet in the
dark corner of a gritty concert venue, but get to know them and you'll see
they just want to make you a pretty picture!

Wednesdays Woes
Rebecca (Urbanski) Steele opens her solo exhibition entitled “Wednesday’s Woes” in (art)ificial gallery, based on one of her favorite childhood poems. On Saturday, October 16th from 6-9pm her inner child will be reveled within these works. The works will echo where our adult selves originate. Steele says “Almost everything I imagined as a kid was something that scared me or made me sad... even stranger places to visit as an adult.” Visitors will fall in love with the little girls that travel in these works while enjoying the tranquil color palette.

Where’s My Jet Pack? is a trio exhibition that will be held in (art)ificial Gallery with futuristic excitement by artists Sean Burns, Eric Kaplan and Keith Gayton on Saturday September 4th from 6-9pm. The concept of the show is to combine multiple views of the future while having the three styles play off each other. Each work will have added elements that reference the opposing artists work, says Burns. You can expect a 1950’s-60’s Sci-Fi feel in this exhibit, as the floor will be covered in a murky fog, alien rocks and moon dust, and floating astronauts will grace every corner of (art)ifical gallery. So bring bring your tinfoil hats and laser guns for a futuristic ride.

Hello, my name is Jon. My friends call me nubby. I lost my dominant hand (left hand) my last week as a senior year in high school. I have since re-learned how to draw with my right hand. (hence the nickname Nubby) I attend Skidmore College located in Saratoga Springs, NY, and I will be a senior this coming year. I have three concentrations: drawing, printmaking, and design. I hope to attend graduate school in the fall of 2011. My art tends to focus on the concept of loss and life after death. A signature of my art is people or creatures with missing limbs. Before Baldwin-Wallace I had the privilege of attending Miller South School for the Visual & Performing Arts and then continuing the art program at Firestone High School in Akron. This summer I am busy directing a fashion show, conducting creative research, and working two awesome internships. I am most excited about working as a Special Projects Intern at the Pop Shop Gallery.

After studying abroad in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East I realized that much more attention should be placed on global issues. Consumption and poverty are some concerns I feel obliged to commentate on. For me there is no better way to convey these concepts then with new media. Conceptual new media can be rousing, confusing, and exhilarating. Video installation, lights, sound, found objects, spray paint, cardboard, robotics, smell and touch are essential to my voice.

I just finished my fourth year at Baldwin-Wallace College. I plan on finishing school next fall with a major in studio art and a minor in computer science. As far as my art interests go, I move more toward the graphic arts. I want to work for a skateboard or snowboard company designing graphics for boards, apparel, and other advertisements. I would also like to do album covers, concert posters or any type of trend setting layouts. I am interning at the Pop Shop because, among other things, I want to learn more about marketing myself as an artist. Besides the fact that they sell art, they also do their own marketing and advertising. I think I could pick up a lot of good knowledge about marketing through art.

The Vinyl Frontier is coming and just in time. On May 1st, 2010 The Pop Shop Gallery will celebrate its 5th birthday by housing a show with a classic spin! Hundreds of vintage vinyl records will be salvaged from resale shops and basements, reborn, and used as decorative wall pieces in the show entitled “The Vinyl Frontier”. These circular canvases will be a great addition to any collector’s walls. The Vinyl Frontier will be a cash and carry event! That means we will allow the work to be taken home as soon as it's sold. “CHOD: Ramifications” exhibit offers choose-your-own adventure experience
LAKEWOOD – “CHOD: Ramifications,” an art exhibit giving a glimpse into
the different directions life can take, is on display at (Art)ificial
gallery, 17020
Madison Ave., Lakewood, from Nov. 13 to Dec. 24.
Inspired by choose-your-own adventure books, “Ramifications” explores
both realistic and fantastical possibilities of a man’s life: family
man, vagrant revolutionary, street fighter, mutated monstrosity,
pillager of the high seas, heart broken sap, psycho killer, space
explorer, and broken down drunkard.
Chod, the artist behind “Ramifications,” is a graduate of Columbus
College of Art and Design. He won many awards for his illustration and
design work for The Medina Gazette, including Best Illustrator in
Ohio. “Ramifications” is his second solo art exhibit.
The public is invited to a free reception from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 13.
An adult after party will be held at Mullens on Madison (located next
to the gallery) following the reception.

The Pop Shop is highlighting the trends and styles of today’s tattoo artists in a show entitled “The Ink Well” Show. This show will take place on Saturday March 20th. All tattoo shops in the general Cleveland area are welcome to participate.

In (art)ificial gallery, The New Era exhibition will open simultaneously with the Pop Shop’s event, on February 6th. The New Era, has been described as the observations and exaggerations of Cleveland’s own, Rick Sans and Sergio Andujar II. The duo states “As we enter a new decade, we feel there is a mix of new and old within the social conscious. The things we grew up with, have come back in full circle, and seem to over saturate the world we live in.” The artwork is the celebration and rebellion of modern pop culture and its history. This show features artwork primarily on vinyl records as well as canvas and other found objects.
Rick Sans and Sergio Andujar II use a wide variety of mediums ranging from inks, acrylic paints, spray paint, screen printing, stenciling, and paint markers, on anything from vinyl records and canvas to blocks of wood. Their artwork and clothing line Sans Oceana has been seen on MTV, Nintendo commercials, feature films and Cleveland Fashion Week. Their styles are influenced by illustration, graffiti and anime.

The Black and White Affair

The Pop Shop Gallery is proud to announce its next event entitled, The Black and White Affair, on Saturday February 6th from 6-9pm. This show case of over 20 Cleveland artists will highlight the achromatic scheme of black and white imagery. Pieces will range from paintings, photographs, and drawings that all follow a contemporary style.
